We all know that 50 is the correct age for people to start getting screened for colon cancer. And thanks to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, we also know more about celebrities and their personal lives than we ever thought possible. We are given a rare glimpse into the glamorous, and sometimes not so glamorous, thoughts, opinions and everyday antics of a celebrity’s day. So what if we merged the two? We already know that celebrities use these outlets to share their views on certain political and social issues, but what if they used their star power to promote everyday health? No, I don’t mean sharing their crazy diets or their impossible-for-normal-people workouts but just the healthy things we should do to have a long and healthy life, like getting a colonoscopy.
The first step to preventing colon cancer is getting screened for it. Colon cancer is highly treatable and preventable when detected early, and a number of celebrities have already shared their experiences and shown their support for colon cancer awareness such as Trace Adkins, Dr. Oz and Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne. Even Katie Couric went so far as to film her colonoscopy and share it with the world on the Today Show. But there are many other celebrities over the age of 50 who should be getting regular colonoscopies to prevent colon cancer: Julianne Moore, Madonna, George Clooney, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Tom Hanks, Sean Penn and Jamie Lee Curtis just to name a few. What if they all got screened for colon cancer? And what if they shared their results with us?
Celebrities have more influence than we’d like to admit, and if they were to tell their over-50 fans about their colonoscopy experience, they could raise more awareness and help increase the number of people getting screened.
