Using the Internet Regularly Can Help Keep You Colon Cancer-Free

Did you know that using the internet could prolong your life? Recent research is finding that middle-aged men and women who use the internet are more likely to make healthy choices like exercising, eating nutritious foods and not smoking. Compared to their counterparts who do not use the internet, men and women who use a computer regularly are also more apt to have a colon screening. This may sound far-fetched, but here are some specific details about adult men and women who are computer users:

  • They are 24 percent more likely to eat at least five servings of fruit and vegetables per day
  • They are 50 percent more likely to take part in regular physical activity
  • They are 44 percent less likely to be smokers

According to Christian Von Wagner, Ph.D., at University College in London, there is “a dose relationship between internet users and cancer-preventative behaviors.” Men and women who occasionally use the internet were more likely to participate in cancer-preventative behaviors than non-users. Further, frequent internet users more likely to participate in cancer-preventative behaviors than occasional users.

Interestingly, Von Wagner noticed that young, white, wealthier and educated males used the internet much more than older, less wealthy, non-white men who may have physical disabilities. Von Wagner refers to this dichotomy as the “digital divide.” Tests such as this one allows researchers to evaluate and address these inequalities. Maybe more people need to be educated on how to use the internet. Maybe others would benefit from understanding more of how the internet can be a tool for education and wellness (Source: Medical Xpress).

Computers are useful for much more than gaming or Facebook. Add some “health education” to your day by making some time to read up on the importance of regular colonoscopies and schedule an appointment today if you are due for a screening.
